About the Artist:
My name is Zenaida Maldonado Martinez and I am part of the Indigenous Mixtec Nation from Barranca de la Palma Cochoapa el Grande, Guerrero México. Due to poverty and lack of opportunities, I migrated to the United States leaving behind my three children. Since arriving, I began working the strawberry field with my husband. With the little income that we earn, we send them to my mother who is caring for my children. Recently this January 2022 I became a sponsor of my little sister Marisol, who is in middle school. Zenaida and her family carried the tradition to make their traditional textile.
Mi nombre es Zenaida Maldonado Martínez y soy parte de la Nación Indígena Mixteca de Guerrero México. Debido a la pobreza y a la falta de oportunidades, emigré a los Estados Unidos dejando atrás a mis tres hijos. Desde que llegué, empecé a trabajar en el campo de la fresa con mi marido. Con los pocos ingresos que ganamos, se los enviamos a mi madre que es quien cuida a mis hijos. Recientemente, en enero de 2022, me convertí en madrina de mi hermanita Marisol, que está en la escuela secundaria.
